3 Musketeers Bar

The 3 Musketeers Bar from M&M/Mars (known as a Milky Way everywhere outside of the US) was introduced to the US way back in 1932. It's name comes from the original design of the product. A three piece, three flavor confection, the 3 flavors being vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.

And so it remained until 1945 when as a result of the Second World War the price of strawberries went up thanks to the Luftwaffe and their strategic strawberry bombing campaign. This ruthless tactical bombing almost caused the extinction of the US strawberry, and Mars decided to quit using them in their products.

For those of you who are concerned about what you put in your mouth, the modern 3 Musketeers Bar is Kosher, but is not guaranteed to be vegetarian and may contain traces of peanut. Just so long as it doesn't contain traces of Crunchy Frog [Video].

My biggest complaint about 3 Musketeers, apart from the name (it's a good job Alexandre Dumas Senior is long deceased) is the misleading advertising campaign. On more than one occasion, the commercials have depicted the bars as being lighter than air, floating up and out of reach of the strangely slim chocoholic women. This has happened both with a movie theater and a salon setting. I have recreated both scenarios and both times, physics, specifically gravity won every time. View a sample commercial here.

Now, the best bit. The 3 Musketeers Bar is soft to the bite as the teeth break through the milk chocolate exo-skeleton into the soft, whipped nougat centre. The chocolate fragments melt away as you chew the light and fluffy filling until it dissolves. For an interesting textural sensation, I like to put my 3 Musketeers in the freezer before consumption. This makes the bar harder and more brittle and the nougat becomes considerably chewier until it warms in the mouth.

Aside from the misleading marketing campaigns, I enjoy a 3 Musketeers Bar as a quick snack while at the office. It is not a particularly filling snack, unless you are eating 4 or 5 of them, but they get sickly sweet after the second bar, so this is not recommended.
